Field Trips

Spend an Educational Day at Indian Hills Camp!

Your 2nd - 6th grade students will have a memorable and enjoyable time of learning in each of our field trip classes. Choose 2 classes from the class list below. Grade levels are suggested but not exclusive (all classes can be attended by all grades). All classes follow California State Standards.  Upon arrival, teachers will receive class outlines and enough “Fun Fact” cards for each student.

2nd Grade

Indian Artifacts
Today artifacts are used to learn about the past. Explore the fascinating history of the Kumeyaay as we examine common artifacts and "uncover" the past. CA State Standards:1.1, 4.1

Animal Antics
Enter the world of animals in this fun, hands on, educational experience. Students will learn about the care and maintenance of common pets and farm animals. A special "hands on time" with our friendly farmyard animals is included. CA State Standards:2a, 2c-d

Diggin' Deep
Southern California has a rich foundation of geological wonders. Learn about the complicated world of soil and discover the unique and fascinating geology of Southern California. CA State Standards: 2a-c

Pushin' and Pullin'
To move or not to move? Investigate the exciting world of energy in this class about forces seen and unforeseen. CA State Standards: 1c-e

Lost
Survival is essential if you are lost. Tips will be discussed on how to ensure that rescuers have enough time and information to find you.

3rd Grade

Indian Life
Learn the life patterns of Southern California Indians and how the Indians used and changed their environment to help them survive. CA State Standards: 2.1-2

Musk Ox Maneuvers
Specific characteristics are needed for animals to survive in extreme environments. This class includes a game to demonstrate adaptations. CA State Standards: 3a-d

Astronomy
Come explore the night sky as we follow the moon and discover some interesting constellations. CA State Standards: 4a-e

The Mighty Oak
Energy is on the move as we study the dynamic world of the oak tree. Follow the trail of energy as it travels through one of the most magnificent trees on earth. CA State Standards: 1a-c

Rattlesnakes
Rattlesnakes are the only poisonous snake in Southern California. Learning about the characteristics and habits of these reptiles could prove to be a life saving experience.

4th Grade

Gold Mine
The discovery of gold in California drastically changed the state for all time. Learn how to pan of gold and discover the conflicts that arose among those seeking to "strike it rich." CA State Standards: 3.3, 4.2

Web of Life
Play a food chain game while learning that all living things require energy to live and grow. Starting with the sun, the path of energy is taken to the top of the food chain. CA State Standards: 2a-c

Volcanoes
Volcanoes play a vital role in the earth's crust. They are a magnificent example of the forces at work beneath us. CA State Standards: 4a,b and 5a-c

Orienteering
Planet Earth is governed by unseen forces. Come discover how you can use the force of magnetism to help you survive in the wilderness. CA State Standards: 1b, e, f

Bugs
San Diego is home to thousands of species of creepy crawlers and flyers. Some are beneficial to humans and some are not. Discover the wild world of insects and arachnids in this fun hands on class.

5th Grade

Overland Trail Survival
"Westward Ho!" Early Settlers learned to survive in extreme conditions as they journeyed west. Do you have what it takes to survive on the Overland trail? CA State Standards: 8.3,4

First Aid and Anatomy
Respiration, circulation, and the processing of food is necessary for life. These will be discussed as we examine first aid issues in relation to these body systems. CA State Standards: 2a-d, g

Water Cycle
What comes down, must go up! Follow the tail of water from solid to liquid to vapor and back to liquid. This cycle supplies us with our drinking water even in dry San Diego. CA State Standards: 3a-e

Crazy Chemicals
What comes out must breakdown. Or does it? Students will learn about the properties of common chemicals and their effects on our environment. CA State Standards: 1a, g, h

Water Survival
Water conservation can add precious moments to increase your chance of survival. Learn how to survive in the wilderness with a limited supply of water.

6th Grade

Archeology
Previous cultures have left their mark in the earth around us. Discover, with a little digging , the past of San Diego. CA State Standards: 1.2

Amazing Journeys
Migration 101. Come discover the exciting world of endangered birds / mammals and insects as we track various migrating species. CA State Standards: 5b-e

Earthquakes
There's a whole lot of shaking going on! California is home to many active faults. Being prepared for the "Big one" is just as important as knowing what will cause it. CA State Standards: 1a-g

Fire Science
Fire is a powerful tool not a toy. Study the transfer of heat and energy found in fire. Common sense safety tips and fire experiments. CA State Standards: 3b-c

Edible, Poisonous and Medicinal Plants
The wide variety of plants in San Diego can be used to survive in even harsh conditions. Learn which plants are useful and which ones to avoid.



Field Trip Cost:

$8 Per Student

No deposit is required. You may pay the full fee on arrival ($8). This fee includes the picnic charge, two 50-minute program presentations, a 30-minute visit to the farmyard, and free time to play on the giant playground. Snacks, souvenirs, and sports equipment rentals are also available at the Camp Store.

*For every 8 students, one chaperone/teacher may attend for free. Additional adults and children over 3 will be charged $8.

Sample Schedule

9:30 - Arrival/ Free Time/ Restrooms

10:00 - Class Selection #1

10:50 - Visit the Farmyard/Free Time on the Playground

11:30 - Class Selection #2

12:20 - Lunch/Store Open (Optional)

1:30 - Free Time/ Restrooms/ Departure

Each student and chaperone should bring a lunch and plan on a 30 minute lunch period. An average field trip takes about 4 hours. Classes may arrive as early as 9:00 am and depart as late as 2:00 pm.

School Picnics

Indian Hills Camp offers its facilities for picnics where the school staff schedules and conducts its own activities. Picnics may be scheduled any time during the school year, Monday - Friday. The picnic fee is $6.00 per person (students and adults). The fee includes use of the farmyard, picnic area, swimming pool and giant playground. Archery and other sports equipment is available for rent from the Camp Store.

SPECIAL - End of School Year Picnics are only $5.00 per person. Only available in June and there is a 50 student min.
